Ex-PM Khan’s party says no intention to compromise Pakistan’s economic interests in letter to IMF

A leader from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party denied rumors that former Prime Minister Imran Khan would compromise the country’s economic interests for political gains in a letter to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The PTI leader assured that their party would always work in Pakistan’s best interests.

This statement came after an IMF spokesperson declined to comment on political developments in Pakistan following the recent general elections, which the PTI claimed were heavily rigged. Earlier, Khan’s legal team had announced plans to send a letter to the IMF requesting an independent audit of the February 8 national polls.

Pakistan is currently under a short-term IMF loan program set to expire next month. The newly elected government is expected to negotiate another bailout package with the IMF in the coming months.

The PTI leader emphasized that they would not take any actions that would harm the state, pose a threat to the country, or damage the economy. He mentioned that the letter would be shared with the media for further scrutiny. He also highlighted the PTI’s efforts in developing projects for the welfare of the people and attracting investment to Pakistan during their tenure.

Imran Khan has faced legal challenges since being removed from power in a no-confidence vote in April 2022. He has been in prison since August of the same year after being convicted on corruption and other charges.

Another prominent PTI leader defended Khan’s decision to write to the IMF, stating that Pakistan’s well-being was their top priority. They believed that engaging with the IMF was crucial for financial discipline, good governance, and economic stability, which would benefit the people of Pakistan. The PTI leader expressed their commitment to democracy and called for support from the international community.

According to media reports, Pakistan is planning to secure a new IMF loan of at least $6 billion, with talks expected to commence in March or April.
